We swim in the waters of language, and within those waters are known dangers, essentially words that are verboten. Yet that can change over time. We see that the word “Nazi” is no longer toxic, nor are Nazi-related ideas, e.g., Hair Füror referring to people as “vermin.” In local politics, the word “Republican” was so toxic that in 2018 and 2020, the campaign signs of Republicans avoided using that word. Well, things have changed.
In the contest for a replacement for George Santos’ seat, the Republican running for that seat now uses the word “Republican” on campaign signs. This might seem a small issue. However, it is indicative of an important change. The toxicity associated with that word has faded, meaning that people have already forgotten the not-too-distant past, and are ignoring the many Republicans who, right this very minute, are working tirelessly to destroy democracy.
